Celebrating the holidays at home is common for most people, but spending Christmas in an RV can be a magical experience for those willing to try something new! Pack up your Christmas cheer and check out these tips for the most wonderful time of the year!
Readying Your Rig
You can’t have Christmas in an RV without readying your rig first! There are a few steps to take before hitting the road to ensure the most comfortable trip possible.
Start with an exterior inspection of your camper to make sure there are no holes, cracks, rusting, or visible damage that could put a damper on your vacation. Check the tire pressure and top off if needed.
Next, take a look under the hood, particularly for any small animals that made a home or possibly chewed through the wires of your battery. Check the fluid level and fan belts, including looking under your camper for puddles of liquid.
Finally, take it inside! Clear out the antifreeze from your pipes if you’ve used it and run the pumps to check for a pressure leak. Perform another visual inspection around the camper for cracks and holes, as well as for the seals around windows and doors. Replace as necessary, since proper sealing and insulation makes a big difference between a comfortable and cold trip!
Once the motorhome itself is ready to go, start adding in those personal touches with the decorating tips below!
Downsizing Your Decorations
If you’re someone who likes to go all out during the holidays, Christmas in an RV feels intimidating. It can be difficult to “Deck the Halls” with fewer halls and a limited amount of storage. However, with a little creativity, you’ll have an RV full of the holiday spirit inside and out!
Start off with the essentials. Every camper needs bedspreads, towels, curtains, and pillows, so choose more festive options when you pick these items out! When picking out curtains, opt for a thicker option to add extra insulation between your interior and the windows, keeping the cold in and the warm out!
Lights are a fantastic options for Christmas in an RV. They’re affordable, simple, and don’t take up much space! Hang lights throughout the inside and outside of your home on wheels in a variety of shapes and colors for easy cheer! You can also use command hooks to turn string lights into fun shapes like snowflakes and Christmas trees! Garland is another useful decoration for similar reasons.
When it comes to a tree, there are a few things you can do! Inflatable trees are a fun, compact, no-mess options. If you want the real thing, consider a tabletop tree that won’t take up too much space. Another option, depending on your campground, is to decorate a real tree right near your site! Wrap some lights and hang a few outdoor-friendly ornaments, as long as the facility gives you permission.
Packing Presents for Christmas in an RV
The hardest part of celebrating Christmas in an RV is packing up the presents! This is especially difficult when you have young kids who love to hunt down presents early. Even if no one goes looking for them, there are only so many places to put gifts. Try to use areas like the basement that sometimes go empty, or higher cabinets where little hands can’t reach.
WHen it comes to buying RV-friendly gifts, we have a few ideas! Clothes are practical gifts that typically range on the smaller side. In addition, these items can be vacuum-sealed to save space. Small tools like pocketknives, multihead screwdrivers, and flashlights are also practical for travelers, for on the trail as well as right around camp.
Gift cards are extremely simple and space-saving, and they’re great for those who are difficult to shop for. However, if you want something more personal, consider giving the gift of an experience! Schedule a guided hike, dinner, gym membership, lesson, or any other type of activity for your loved ones! Giving the gift of an experiene is always a hit and best of all, takes up no space!
When in doubt, check out this great Gifts for RVers guide. There are a ton of fun and helpful tools on this list, many of which are relatively compact!
